Branch Attend 2019 Water, Environment & Transport Seminar

A delegation from the branch travelled to Cardiff for the annual Water, Environmental and Transport Group (WETs) Seminar.

Saturday opened with a session on equality where we were challenged on how we would react to possibly controversial comments and how we would react. This means identifying and challenging comments that could be construed as discriminatory. This led to some lively discussion and made the group think about how they would react.

We then had a presentation by UNISON's National Young Members Officer on organising and recruiting young members. 2019 is the Year of the Young Member, which is any member under the age of 27. This gave us of ideas to take back to the next branch meting.

The afternoon is where we break into our sector groups, where we discuss issues that are being experiencing by other water branches. It is interesting to hear that other water companies share the issues that we face in Scotland.

On this occasion, we were also debated a mock conference motion to encourage branches that have not submitted motions to the annual WETs Conference to consider this for future conferences.  We discussed this with our sector group before coming together for the mock debate, which ended day 1.

Sunday morning saw reports from 2 branches who have been forced to take industrial action  and the seminar ended with each of the Sector Chair reporting this issues that they are being faced with.

Before the delegates left for their journey home, the Chair gave a special vote of thanks to our very own Branch Secretary Andy Nisbet as this was his last WETs seminar before retiring later this year.
